Pilates Reformer Class
Pilates Reformer Class (Pilates Reformer/Springboard Machines) Joseph Pilates originally developed a series of mat exercises designed to build abdominal strength and body control. In his words, The Pilates Method "develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.' He was way ahead of his time, viewing the body holistically and emphasizing its capacity to work as a whole unit.
Pilates eventually built various pieces of equipment to enhance the results and to replace himself as a spotter for his clients. One of these machines is called the Pilates Reformer. Here at Providence Health and Fitness we have three Pilates Reformers and one Cadillac machine. The Reformer is complemented by the Springboard that is attached to the wall (the tower on the machine).
This class is taught as an open level class with modifications for the beginner and variations for the advanced. The class is a semi-private group lesson limited to three individuals.
The fee for this class is $45.00 as a drop-in or $35.00 if you purchase a series of 10 to be used at anytime. You can register online to secure your spot. As Joseph Pilates used to say: "After 10 sessions you'll notice a difference, after 20 sessions other people will notice a difference, after 30 sessions you'll have a whole new body."

Tai Chi Chuan
Tai Chi Chuan can be literally translated as 'Grand Ultimate Boxing.' Tai Chi is typified by slow movements that help circulate energy around the body and accentuate the mind-body connection. Many health practitioners feel Tai Chi promotes wellness and longevity. Tai Chi originated around the 14th century in China, and most agree that it was developed by a Shaolin monk who wanted to have a martial art based on softness and yielding, rather than on hardness and force that characterized the other martial arts of the time.
How Can Tai Chi Chuan Help You?
Tai Chi is mostly practiced slowly, accentuating balance and gentle movement that circulates energy throughout the vital organs. The National Institute of Health reports that 'People practice Tai Chi for various health-related purposes, such as: For benefits associated with low-impact, weight-bearing, aerobic exercise; To improve physical condition, muscle strength, coordination, and flexibility; To improve balance and decrease the risk of falls, especially in elderly people; To ease pain and stiffness'for example, from osteoarthritis; To improve sleep; For overall wellness.' Many scientific studies have documented the profound benefits that Tai Chi students experience over short periods of study, such as stemming the progress of Parkinson's Disease, reducing the incidence of fractures in adults, and improving quality of life/pain management for those battling cancer and HIV.
Providence Health and Fitness has partnered with Traditional Tai Chi Chuan Associates of America (TTCCAA) to provide high quality instruction for our students in New Providence. All classes are conducted by one of TTCCAA's founders, Stephen Matthaey.
